We provide a dedicated apprenticeship service, providing excellent training and recruitment opportunities for apprentices across the country, and a flexible approach to learning, catering to the needs of each individual and organisation. A Runway Training apprentice will receive the very best support available. We ensure apprentices and their employers have access to our team of experienced, highly skilled assessors and trainers who will be on hand throughout the apprenticeship to offer support and guidance.

Runway Training apprentices are provided with all of the necessary online and offline learning resources required to complete and progress successfully with the apprenticeship. For learners not wishing to undertake the full apprenticeship standard we can also offer standalone diplomas.

An apprenticeship is an opportunity for young people and adult learners to earn while they learn in a real job, gaining valuable experience and accredited qualifications with a real future.

There are over 700 apprenticeship standards to choose from and we offer impartial information, advice and guidance to ensure you can make an informed decision about the right standard for you.

Completing an apprenticeship is a great way of kick-starting your career, gaining practical skills, industry knowledge and earning a salary in either a new role or your existing job role.

Work-based delivery means not having to get the bus to a training centre or college each week.

The minimum salary is £4.30 per hour; however, many apprentices earn significantly more plus you will be given at least 20 days’ paid holiday per year on top of bank holidays.

Apprenticeships train you in the skills your employers want and give you choices in your career. Adding new skills to your CV, including customer service, communications, team-work, leadership and many more, all support you to progress into long term employment.

Get an NUS card!

For a nominal fee, you will receive an NUS Apprenticeship card allowing you to receive discounts in many retail, food and other services. Favourites include McDonalds, Topshop, ASOS, Office and Amazon.

Get no university debt


Universities are charging around £9000 a year. Add in a maintenance loan and you are looking at a debt of £45,000 PLUS before you even start work! An apprenticeship allows you to pursue a career whilst earning a salary.

Who Can Do An Apprenticeship?

Anyone living in England, over 16 years old and not in full-time education can apply to be an apprentice. You can also complete an apprenticeship as part of your current job role to help you progress and develop your skills.

What Qualifications Will I Be Working Towards?

You will study an apprenticeship standard that sets out the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be competent in a particular job role. There are different levels of apprenticeship: Intermediate, Advanced or Higher level. The apprenticeship is made up of:

  • Knowledge, Skills & Behaviours
  • 20% off-the-job learning
  • Functional Skills in maths, English (if you do not hold grade 4 or above at GCSE)
  • ERR (employee rights and responsibilities)

The level of apprenticeship is dictated by the job role you will be applying for and your previous qualifications.

How Is The Qualification Delivered?

Our apprenticeships are work-based, so they are delivered entirely in the workplace. A Runway Apprenticeship Teacher will help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out by the apprenticeship standard you are working towards. They will assess you in a number of ways including: observations, written, verbal, witness testimonies from managers and work evidence.

How Long Does The Apprenticeship Last And What Happens At The End Of The Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships last a minimum of 1 year, after this apprentices decide with their employers whether they would like to continue with the same organisation or whether they think it is time to move on elsewhere.

After finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two-thirds (64%) staying with the same employer. Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.

How Much Are Apprentices Paid?

Apprentices must be paid a minimum of the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage of £4.30 per hour for a minimum of 30hrs per week. We encourage all of our employers to consider living costs in the area and generally they offer a higher rate than this.

After year 11 pupils do not have to stay in school but have a choice about what they do between the ages of 16 and 18 years.

Young people do need to continue in education or training but this could be full time study in school, college or even with a training provider. It could also be full time work or volunteering combined with education or training. Alternatively it could be as an apprentice.

What Are Apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are jobs with training attached that enable learners to earn while they learn. As with regular employees, apprentices earn a wage and will work alongside team members to gain industry knowledge and job specific skills.

Apprenticeships can be undertaken in a huge variety of different areas from accountancy to veterinary nursing, and business and administration to engineering. Employers can access Apprenticeship training for existing employees as well as new recruits.

What Are The Benefits Of Completing An Apprenticeship?

Earning a salary – The minimum salary is £4.15 per hour; however, many apprentices earn significantly more.

Once an Apprentice completes their first year and if aged 19 or over, they are entitled to the minimum hourly rate of the national minimum wage for their age.

How Much Will An Apprentice Earn?

The average gross weekly wage for an apprentice is £200. The minimum wage for apprentices is £4.15 per hour, but in reality many employers pay more than this. The actual amount that an apprentice will earn is very much dependant on the type of apprenticeship being undertaken, the region and the type of business involved. Some apprentices can earn as much as £300 – £500 per week for a Higher Apprenticeship.

Do I Have To Pay Tax And National Insurance?

All employees aged over 16 must still pay tax and national insurance on their income.

What Are The Entry Requirements?

Anyone over the age of 16, living in England is eligible to apply for an apprenticeship. The exact entry requirements depend on the job. English and maths GCSEs are not usually required but can be learnt ‘on the job’ as part of the training.

What Different Levels Of Apprenticeships Are There?

There are three levels of apprenticeship – Intermediate (level 2), Advanced (level 3) and Higher (level 4 or above).

Once you have made the decision that you would like to apply for an apprenticeship, you will need to go through a few stages before you start in your chosen career path…..

Create a CV

To apply for most apprenticeship vacancies, you will need a CV. A CV is a summary of your skills experience and education and is the first thing employers will see, so needs to offer the best impression of you.

The following list is what you should include.

Name and Contact Details

Your address, contact number and a suitable email address. You do not need to include details such as date of birth, marital status, gender or a photograph.

Personal Profile

This section is to highlight the skills you have learnt in school, work experience, part time jobs or any other activities. A short paragraph should be plenty.

Education

Make a note of which schools you attended and put in all the grades that you have achieved plus any predicted grades.

Work History/Experience

With the dates descending, put in any work experience you have including any volunteering, part time, summer or other jobs you may have had. Make sure that you include all the activities you did and the skills you developed.

Interests and Hobbies

Add your interests, particular hobbies that show team working, leadership, communications skills.

Finding an Apprenticeship

The most popular site to source apprenticeship vacancies is via the National Apprenticeship Service, you can search by qualification type, job role and location. You are able to apply online for the roles and complete some online questions.

Suitable candidates will be requested to send a copy of their CV via email, you can use this opportunity to tailor your CV to the job role, changing your personal profile to demonstrate that you have the skills and personal qualities they have asked for.

Check, check and check again

Before you press send, check your CV for spelling and grammar errors, get someone else to read your CV and then double check! This is the first impression the employer will have of you- make sure it is a good one!

Hooray! You have an interview!

Congratulations for reaching this stage! Now don’t let the nerves kick in As long as you prepare for your interview you have a great chance of being successful! Here are a few hints and tips to help you a prepared!

Research the company and industry – chances are you will be asked what you know about the company. They will want to know you that you have spent some time researching the organisation.

List 5 questions to ask about the job and company – at the end of the interview you will be asked if you have any questions. Have a few prepared!

Prepare some interview answers – some questions are more likely to come up than others. Spend some time online looking at potential questions and think about how you will answer these.

Prepare your outfit – Make sure that you look professional and check yourself in a mirror before you leave. Looking professional will give you extra confidence!

Check your directions – Ensure you know where you are going and arrive at least 10 minutes early.

Lastly – Try to relax and focus during the interview. Use this as an opportunity to learn as much as you can about the company
